PSHE and SRE

Intent of the PSHE Curriculum at Lakeside

PSHE provides children with the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to successfully manage their lives – now and in the future. It enables pupils to develop the qualities and attributes needed to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. Our intent is that the PSHE curriculum will...

• promote the spiritual, moral, social, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils;

• prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life;

• promote British Values.

Implementation of the PSHE Curriculum at Lakeside

Lakeside Primary Academy follow the Jigsaw PSHE scheme of work. Jigsaw provides a whole school, mindful approach to teaching PSHE. The scheme aims to build children’s capacity to learn and equip them for life in an ever changing world. It covers the statutory requirements for Relationships and Health Education.

The Jigsaw scheme is structured to provide knowledge and skills development using a spiral curriculum. There are six units (one per half term): Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships and Changing Me. The whole school completes the same unit at the same time.

There are seven main themes which run through all units of work:

  • Relationships
  • Values
  • Mental Health
  • SMSC
  • Self-esteem
  • Social Skills
  • Safeguarding (including internet safety)

How SRE is taught at Lakeside

Our school works with BigTalk Education who deliver their Growing Up Safe: Whole School Approach (GUS programme) to each class within school.

Teaching staff observe the BigTalk Education SRE lessons as part of their CPD programme to ensure they can reinforce the lesson content and answer any follow up questions throughout the academic year.

As part of the GUS programme, the team from BigTalk Education host an annual consultation meeting with parents/carers and staff to share the resources that will be used with the children. Parents and carers are given support to help them talk with their children about such topics as keeping safe, puberty, reproduction etc.

How do I find out more information about the PSHE and SRE curriulum?

If you have any questions about this area of the curriculum please speak to your child's class teacher initially or to Miss Stocks (who can be contacted through the school office).
