Investigating the 5 second rule!

Today Year 3 set up an experiment to test the "5 second rule" - where people drop food on the floor and claim that if they pick it up before 5 seconds it is "safe" to eat...

First we washed our hands thoroughly then got 4 slices of bread. The first piece we used as a control slice of bread, this one went straight in to the zipped up food bag. The second slice we dropped on the floor for 1 second. The next slice we dropped for 5 seconds and then the final slice we dropped for 10 seconds. All the slices of bread were then put safely in a zipped up bag. We also made sure all the slices of bread were dropped in the same place  on the floor to make it a fair comparison.

We are now waiting to see what will happen (as with all science experiments we made our predictions and await eagerly to see if they are correct!)

The bread is currently at the back of the classroom where there is an "Observation Station" set up for children to observe any changes over the next few weeks....watch this space for photographic evidence of what we find out! It may well change how you view the "5 second rule!"
