Changes to Maths Curriculum
Posted by: Mrs R Phillips15th July 2016
From September 2016, we will be introducing Inspire Maths in all classes. Although not all current year groups will access this curriculum scheme in its entirety initially, the approaches and applications from this scheme will be adotted across all the year groups in the school to ensure all pupils benefit from this new approach.
Inspire Maths is a whole-school primary maths programme based on the leading Singapore Maths series My Pals are Here, used in 100% of Singapore’s state primary schools.
Some of the things involved are:
Pupil textbooks to introduce concepts in a very visual and logical way, enabling all children to develop critical thinking skills, make mathematical connections and become confident mathematicians.
A concrete – pictorial – abstract approach, ensuring secure foundations and deep understanding of mathematical concepts. This means that children across the school will be using mathematical equipment to ‘see’ the maths they are doing before moving on to written methods.
Spiral progression to develop fluency, reasoning, and problem solving and conceptual understanding for mastery so things will be revisited regularly throughout different units of work.
Please find some activities that you could use with your child to support them with their work below.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to speak to your child’s class teacher or me. There will be a chance for you to see the books and materials used in the Autumn term so we hope to see you then.
